From the P-53 to the P-85 Platform, Metasa Marks More Than 20 Years in Brazil's Offshore Market

This story began with the company's participation in the P-53 Platform project, considered the milestone that opened the doors of the segment to Metasa.

The P-53 is located in the Campos Basin (RJ), in the Marlim Leste Field, about 120 km offshore, and has a production capacity of 180,000 barrels of oil per day. For Metasa, the project represented a leap in technical and process requirements in a sector known for its high safety and quality standards.

Between 2005 and 2006, under a contract with Quip, Metasa fabricated approximately 5,000 metric tons of structures, including nine modules, a pipe rack and a telecommunications tower. The work required high-volume welding, a fast delivery pace and an upgraded quality system, with the client monitoring every stage.

“We developed ourselves to enter this market. This project was a leap in quality standards, with a large volume of deliveries, client monitoring of activities, complex structures and a large volume of welding. It was a turning point for Metasa!” says Marcos Mognon, contracts manager.

Since then, the company has expanded its presence in the segment and, according to internal data, has delivered more than 80,000 metric tons of offshore structures over more than 20 years, taking part in projects such as the P-56, P-57, P-79, P-82 and P-84 platforms, among others.

Charqueadas unit: production, logistics and a private dock

In the most recent cycle, Metasa fabricated and assembled three modules of the P-82 Platform at its Charqueadas (RS) unit, a plant that combines industrial capacity and logistics infrastructure to support offshore operations. The unit has its own dock, allowing shipments directly from the industrial complex and improving efficiency and predictability in shipping large structures. To ship the P-82 modules, three shipments were made from Metasa's dock, each weighing approximately 150 metric tons. More than 1,000 metric tons were built for this project.

When completed, the platform will be able to produce 22.5 million barrels of oil per day (bpd), process 12 million m³ of gas per day and store more than 1.6 million barrels. Scheduled to start operating in 2026 in the Santos Basin, it will be the tenth FPSO installed in the Búzios field.

The Charqueadas unit is also involved in fabricating and assembling the structures for the P-84 Platform, totaling approximately 1,000 metric tons. It will be installed in the Atapu field, in the pre-salt layer of the Santos Basin, with operations scheduled to begin in 2029. The project is considered one of the largest oil production structures ever built.

P-85: a new pre-salt milestone and the continuation of Metasa's offshore history

Metasa is currently fabricating structures for the P-85 platform in partnership with Seatrium O&G Americas Limited. In early December 2025, the first plate was cut during a formal ceremony, the milestone that officially marked the start of the company's participation in the project.

“For Metasa, taking part in the P-85 project confirms a history built consistently in the offshore market. Being part of a pre-salt project of this complexity reinforces confidence in our ability to deliver with quality, safety and predictability, meeting the industry's most demanding standards. The P-85 symbolizes a new cycle for Brazil's oil and gas industry, and we are proud to contribute to this progress. It is a project that strengthens Metasa's position in the segment and reaffirms our commitment to continue investing in industrial capacity, engineering and people to support increasingly robust deliveries in the years ahead,” adds Felipe Roso, Metasa's Sales Director.

The P-85 will be installed in the Sépia fields, in the pre-salt layer of the Santos Basin, in water depths of more than 2,000 meters, with production expected to begin between 2029 and 2030. The project calls for an FPSO (Floating Production, Storage and Offloading) unit with a production capacity of up to 225,000 barrels of oil per day and processing capacity of 10 million m³ of gas per day, placing it among the most robust units ever designed for Brazil's pre-salt.

Construction will take place at shipyards in Brazil, China and Singapore, with 25% local content planned, strengthening the national supply chain and the commitment to developing the industry in the country.
