Varig Hangar
- Client: Varig
- Location: Porto Alegre
- Industry: Infrastructure
In 1985, Metasa, then still focused on light structures, won the contract to build Varig's maintenance hangar at Salgado Filho Airport in Porto Alegre.
For a company from the interior of the state, taking on a project of this magnitude meant much more than delivering a large structure: it was the chance to prove that knowledge, engineering and technical capability could take the talent of Marau to major national projects.
At 28 meters high, 80 meters long, 70 meters wide and with 10,800 m² of floor area, the structure was designed to house large aircraft, such as the Boeing 747s the airline was adding to its fleet.
Among the main engineering challenges was the hangar door: 4 meters wide by 8 meters high, it had to let the tail of the Boeing 747 pass through. The drive system required precision, development and extensive testing by the Metasa team.
Completed in 1986, the project represented much more than the delivery of a large structure. It was a true turning point for Metasa: the moment a company from the interior came to be recognized for its ability to execute major projects.
